Why Can't I Just Use Claude + MCP for Agentic Marketing?

Model Context Protocol (MCP) connectors now give AI models like Claude access to your ad platforms, analytics and customer relationship management (CRM) system. Access is a useful start, but running an enterprise marketing stack takes more. Here's what is missing.

THE SHORT ANSWER

You Need to Own the Layer Between Your Stack and the Model

Claude with MCP connectors is a capable analyst that can read the stack but cannot operate it. Before agents act for your brand, you need a semantic and policy layer that resolves identity once, stores your definitions as governed objects, enforces consent in one place and records every decision.

Three Gaps that an MCP Connector Approach Leaves Open

Each gap appears when a question spans more than one system.

1
Fragmentation
Each connector uses its own IDs, taxonomies and audience definitions. Claude must match them on every question, and nothing keeps that match for the next one.
2
Semantics
No layer stores what your brand means by lapsed buyer, category or incremental lift. The same question can get a different answer on a different day.
3
Control
Consent and policy rules live in each vendor's connector. No single layer enforces them, and no single record shows how an agent made a decision.
Important note:

It's worthwhile to note what MCP gets right: the model is strong, MCP is open, connectors work with the systems you already own, and read-only is a safe start. The issue is the architecture, not the model.

Every Major Platform Now Has an MCP Server

Feb 2026
Amazon Ads opened its MCP server to all API partners. Agents can create, update, and report on campaigns.
Apr 2026
Meta released its ads MCP server in beta, and opened it to all developers in July 2026.
Jul 2026
Google and Google Analytics released Ads and GA4 MCP servers. They are read-only.

FAQ

Your agentic marketing MCP approach questions answered.

What is MCP

Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets an AI model call a vendor's system through a connector. The connector decides which data and actions to expose.

Can Claude with MCP run our marketing?

It can read many systems and is strong at analysis and preparation. It cannot hold a resolved identity, store governed definitions, enforce consent across systems or produce an audit record.

What is a semantic layer?

A layer that resolves identity across sources and stores each brand definition once, with an owner and a version, so every agent and analyst uses the same meaning.

Can skills fill the gaps between an agentic marketing system and using Claude with MCP?

Skills reduce drift, but they need authoring, maintenance, evals and governance. A skill tells the model what to do, but it cannot and will not stop the model from doing something else.

Why does the Claude + MCP approach cost more in tokens?

Because raw results land in context, reconciliation runs on every question, which means nothing persists between users, and long conversations re-read earlier results.

Does Kana replace MCP?

No. Kana uses MCP to bring data in and send actions out, and supplies the shared meaning and control between them that would be missing otherwise.

Which model does Kana use?

Kana picks the best model for each task based on quality, cost and latency, so the brand does not have to track it.
